Overall, there’s a lot to like here

Narrative

After her mother’s death, a Japanese-Cambodian manga artist and her boyfriend decide to travel to Cambodia to learn more about her past, but when she encounters strange occurrences within the building that suggest something darker is happening to the residents, she has to stop before it spreads. One of the strongest features is a really fun and engaging setup that features a lot of interconnected parts that come together really well. Starting with the backstory of her mother dying under mysterious circumstances while living in the community she’s long since left, this provides the means to establish the reason for the return, as well as telling a fair bit about their history with each other. Since we’re aware of the relationship presented and how it affects her, the desire to reconnect with everyone when she arrives to find out the cause is a natural part of her reunion.

This setup helps the film become much more entertaining as the menacing instincts begin to manifest themselves

Additionally, the presence of community behavior and rituals seems like the perfect choice to enhance this type of story, which appears as quaint customs before gradually seeming darker and more hostile. This brings a wonderful sense of impending dread the longer the two remain in the community, with the increasing danger leading to more thrills. With the low-key nature revolving around the good-natured, if slightly distraught, behavior of the community or simply noticing the ritualistic decorations left behind, this is good enough to serve the film well until it gets to the more overt sequences later on when she is left alone in the apartment. The big sequence works as a form of bizarre meal preparation with the gathered family members and others she has met in the community performing what appears to be a ritual ceremony designed to prepare her for a special occult ritual that soon turns into a fever dream that she can’t distinguish her dream from reality is quite impressive.

Among the main factors is the feeling of confusion present here, as very little is explained

The remainder of this begins in a much darker genre effort that includes several revelations about the visions he is experiencing, leading to the wild finale where the dark origins of the ceremony are revealed, as it involves bringing the new spirit into the world. body by a host who is once again more discreet than expected, but still manages some generally disturbing imagery and stalking throughout the complex. All of this brings a lot of pleasure here, as while there aren’t many negatives here, several issues do arise. As the first half is much more sinister and low-key than anything else, there isn’t much to reveal about what is going on, preferring to stay focused on the eerie atmosphere of the building and its sinister behavior to generate almost scare.

These are some minor downsides presented in this

exclusively. As a result, almost nothing is revealed about what the community is trying to do, what their ritual entails, or how it will all be performed, so very little is mentioned. It’s not until the end that anything comes together, so there’s a chance that it might be a little confusing at first to figure out what’s going on. The other downside is that this setup also allows for a pretty slow first half and very little happens beyond the setup of the stories that pay off at the end, so it takes a while to get its point across.

this before it spreads
